Walks that don’t sink or wash out
Walkways sink and wash out for the same reasons patios do: thin bases over clay and water running across them. We build walks on a compacted gravel base, edge them so they don’t spread, and grade the ground beside them so storm water passes under or around the walk.
Steps on a slope
Many Atlanta homes sit above or below the street, so the front walk ends up as a series of steps. Comfortable outdoor steps have lower risers and deeper treads than indoor stairs, and every step in a run should match. We set steps on solid footings, add landings on long runs, and plan for low-voltage lighting so they are safe after dark.
