Choosing plants for Atlanta yards
Atlanta yards deal with long, humid summers, mild winters, heavy clay and a lot of shade from mature hardwoods. We pick plants for the light and soil in each part of your yard, and we space them for the size they’ll reach in five years.
Preparing soil and drainage
Red clay is rich in minerals but tight and slow to drain. Before we plant, we fix the grade so water moves away from the house and beds, and we work organic matter into planting areas. On lawns and beds that stay wet, we add drainage before anything goes in the ground.
Georgia watering rules
Georgia’s Water Stewardship Act limits outdoor watering to between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. New plantings are exempt for 30 days after installation, and drip irrigation and hand watering are allowed at any time. We set up irrigation to run inside those hours and use drip for beds wherever we can.
Common questions
What grows well in Atlanta clay?
Plenty, once the soil is prepared. Natives and tough adapted plants do best, such as oakleaf hydrangea, inkberry holly, Florida anise, river birch, switchgrass and coneflower. We loosen and amend whole planting beds so roots can spread. A single hole dug in clay fills with water and drowns them.
What hardiness zone is Atlanta?
Most of metro Atlanta is zone 8a or 8b on the USDA map released in 2023. That is warmer than the older map, which put much of the area in 7b, and it widens the range of plants that survive our winters.
